Nuclear and Radiation Accidents Throughout History

There have been many radiation and nuclear accidents throughout history, so it pays to be prepared for the worst.

Many people don’t think that radiation really affects their lives, but accidents can and have happened, so it’s important to be prepared. At SOEKS, we offer everything you need to protect yourself and your family from radiation, including potassium iodide tablets. The following is a list from our experts of a couple of the many nuclear and radiation accidents that have occurred throughout history:

#1. Fukushima Daiichi 2011

A tsunami and earthquake struck Japan in March of 2011, causing a deadly accident at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima Dai-ichi. The earthquake caused the external power to cut off to the reactors, and the tsunami disabled its cooling systems, which lead to overheating and eventually hydrogen explosions. Thousands of people had to evacuate their homes and their lives, leaving miles of completely uninhabitable land behind.

#2. Chernobyl 1986

During a reactor system test, there was a sudden power surge that led to a fire and an explosion. As a result, radiation escaped and was spread across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Approximately 300,000 people had to relocate, and there were at least 4,000 deaths due to cancer from the accident. The disaster in Chernobyl is still considered to be the worst nuclear disaster to this day.

These are just a couple of the notable nuclear power and radiation accidents that have occurred throughout history, and you never know when one could occur again. Stay tuned for our next blog to learn about more nuclear and radiation accidents.
